Building a Global Research Network in Tropical Dry Forest

Hosted by IUFRO Division 1 – Silviculture
Working Party 1.02.03: Ecology and Silviculture of Dry Forests in the Tropics

Join this pivotal webinar to connect, collaborate, and shape the future of dry forest research and resilience.

Context

Tropical dry forests (TDF) are ecologically rich and multifunctional landscapes that support high levels of biodiversity and endemism. They are intricately tied to the lives of millions globally and store approximately 25% of global terrestrial carbon (Bonan 2008), making them vital for regulating both regional and global climate systems (Lewis et al. 2009; Zhou et al. 2013).

Despite this significance, TDFs are often mischaracterized as resource-poor and have historically received less attention than humid tropical forests (Syium 2020). As a result, they remain understudied, undervalued, and frequently excluded from national policies and development programs (Woldeamanuel 2011; Dexter et al. 2018).

This lack of understanding has contributed to a vicious cycle of deforestation, degradation, and desertification, driven by climate change and increasing human pressures. Addressing these challenges requires closing critical knowledge gaps to inform sustainable management, restoration, and conservation efforts.

Webinar Objectives

This webinar seeks to lay the groundwork for a global Tropical Dry Forests (TDF) network dedicated to:

  • Bridging knowledge gaps around climate–ecosystem interactions

  • Promoting research collaboration across regions

  • Supporting resilience-building and climate adaptation strategies through shared learning

By fostering global dialogue, the initiative will enhance understanding of both the shared characteristics and unique features of TDFs around the world, supporting more informed and effective policy and practice.
