It will be held in Nairobi and will comprise high-level delegates from CBD Parties, scientific experts, and technical negotiators to deliberate on the scientific, technical, and implementation groundwork ahead of COP17 in Yerevan. The two back-to-back meetings represent where much of the Convention's substantive work actually happens: SBSTTA-28 will address planning, monitoring, IPBES-related matters, synthetic biology, sustainable wildlife management, and protected areas, while SBI-7 will focus on the first global review of collective progress under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
Objectives
- Scientific Review: Advance evidence-based recommendations on implementation of the KMGBF.
- Global Progress Assessment: Conduct the first global review of collective progress toward the KMGBF's 2030 targets.
- Negotiation Groundwork: Prepare formal recommendations that will form the basis of negotiations and decisions at COP17.
Expected Outcomes
- Adopted recommendations on scientific, technical, and implementation matters, forwarded to COP17.
- A consolidated global progress report on KMGBF implementation, based on national reports and NBSAPs.
- A clearer roadmap for accelerating biodiversity action during the remainder of the decade.
