      Every fruits and oils that are nutritional are medicinal likewise if its medicinal must be nutritional. The opportunity and value chains this products added to the living standard and livelihood of especially the rural dwellers cannot be overemphasised in contributing to economic development, family sustainability as regards food and supplement, health and security issues. Meanwhile, the major challenge which faces this sector is mode and methods of processing which has negative impact on the even local and international trading of this products.
      Demand and acceptability beyond shores of Africa depends on technological advancement. I meant equipments and other facilities
      Africa in other to Have a cutout from world trade investment, their should be training and retraining of professional handling this sector.

    • #382

      Thank you @Dan01, which body or organization do you think should be responsible for this training and retraining of the processors?

      What about the way Forestry or its products are perceived? what do you think can be done to place these numerous NTFPs on their footings?

      Thank you for your questions the moderator
      As observed and stated above. AFF as a body can partner and finance the research project with some Research Institutes, and whose research mandate falls with the purview, and other allied industries and NGOs

      Forestry perceptions is based on individuals views and government policies. If policy makers and, activist and other forestry advocate could have a glimpse of forestry as muilt-billion industry. Attention will also be shifted from fossil fuel.

      Several companies and industries depend solely on one or two NTFPs materials or numerous products to produced other product. I am of the opinion, research project could be iiniated to identify such industries such Shea butter user, Gum and resin users, tannin and users and others for proper documentation and information, database management and probably charged to finance research project on each selected NTFPs products

      Gums and Resins are important but mostly not well utilized as many people especially the local communities are ignorant of the same. We should aim at creating awareness and capacity building of locally led small groups on the gums and Resins importance and how it’s extracted so as the benefits are realized. It will aid in poverty alleviation and alternative livelihoods options to ease pressure on forests.

      We already have fairly good knowledge about the NTFPs; however, what remains is to share this knowledge with potential investors so that they could carry the process forward, in terms of further exploration of the resource base to ascertain if it can support profitable commercial exploitation.
      We could now proceed to identify a few key investors/companies on the continent that could be consulted on this possibility.

      How can one aim at exploring the value chain of traded gums and resins and their contribution to rural livelihood and national economy?.

    • #393

      @Saum
      Thanks for your contribution
      But if we aim at creating awareness and capacity building of locally led small groups on the gums and Resins importance and how it’s extracted so as the benefits attached will require funding and commitment.
      Which organizations and the strategies to be used can you suggest to achieve this?

        In creating awareness, let us first map the terrain/continent or a set of countries to know who the clients are and then make plans. Such plans will lead us to resources.

      It will be helpful if we could create a repository/data base of all value chain analyses made on NTFPs on the continent and even beyond. We might have to perfect how this analysis is undertaken, and especially to identify entry points for further improvement/investment in order to improve quality, price and profitability of outputs

        I do agree with the mapping out of the different stakeholders involved in the NTPF sector. We have different organizations in Africa and beyond that are already in the sector. After mapping out we can Annalise their capacity and AFF can take facilitate some Forums like this for the different stakeholders to discuss and get the way forward.

      on this aspect “We could now proceed to identify a few key investors/companies on the continent that could be consulted on this possibility”.

      Lets react to the above by listing the identified investors/companies

      NTFPs development and commercialisation will follow the same trends as witnessed in timber products which have supported economies of Countries as well as livelihoods for many years. Both from planted and natural forests. Therefore, addressing some of the challenges will require many approaches which should not only focus on commercial values but also other social and cultural values which are so difficult to quantify in monetary terms. The following listed points may need to be taken on board that may be useful;

      1) From the demand and supply side looking at it from subsector development, there will be a need to develop mechanisms that will lead to addressing some of the issues being discussed;
      R&Ds will need to be established that will look at ways of improving yield and domestication of priority species in farmlands or agroforestry settings, management, land restoration abilities, fodder for livestock, biodiversity and other uses apart from the production of gums and resin

      Communities should be part and parcel in the selection of species of choice which will vary from region to region in different countries

      Policies and regulations need to be put in place so that responsible ministries can lead the process

      Local institutions (Universities etc) to get involved to train local students in the value chains of these products thereby instituting sustainability of the value chains

      It will be more appealing for funders if Women and youth will be the target groups for empowerment

      Capacity building will need to be in a place where students work in rural areas with government extension services already established but might need empowerment

      Look at other sectors where initiatives like these have failed dismally and propose what has to be done differently to support the production and sales of NTFPs

      Institutional arrangements need to be set up for the business of the subsector which should include local farmers (Co-ordination nationally and regionally with strong knowledge and information dissemination mechanisms)

      There is a lot commercial forestry sector with similar products being marketed abroad while local population can’t afford the same products when imported back to countries which produce the products but lack mechanisms for value addition
