Moderatorvery good contribution from Cameroon Claude. Yes the challenges for the development are almost the same across the NTFP sector. Poor investment from the private sector, lack of appropriate technology for processing. There is a need for enabling environment that could attract more private sector investment in the subsector.

ModeratorDear colleagues,
welcome to the web platform of the CoP on NTFPs. We are looking forward to hear from you on the NTFP of nutritional, medicinal and cosmetic significance in your national context. what are they? what are the associated opportunities? challenges for the development of their value chains? policies and institutions supporting their development? contribution to national economy and household livelihood? gender consideration in their management? -

ModeratorGood morning Jeanette and thanks very much Robert for very good thought on what strategy could be put in place for more sustainable financing mechanism of the NDCs. I fully agree that good governance and country’s commitment are key factors for success.
Private finance could also be explored. A study by Dzebo and Paw (2019) has shown that while an enabling environment is an important first step for mobilization of private finance, it is also crucial to enforce existing policies and consistently install and apply safeguard mechanisms, as well as to create awareness of climate impacts among private sector actors. In the same line, it was demonstrated that engaging the private sector throughout the project chain will foster the development and visibility of bankable adaptation models and this can lead to more projects by private sector entities and more private sector co-financing ( Stoll et al., 2021).https://www.researchgate.net/publication/352785765_Increasing_private_sector_engagement_in_adaptation_GCF_Monitor_ed_5 [accessed Oct 15 2021].

Thanks for your comment. one of the key messages drawn from a study done by AFF on Enhancement on forest governance to respond to Paris Agreements and related climate change discourses was that although the specific forestry areas in NDCs vary from country to country, the cross-cutting thread is the recognition of the inter-relationships between adaptation and mitigation and that some adaptation options such as agriculture, forestry and other land use can mitigate emissions. Conversely, there is need for increased knowledge and sharing of information at the country and regional level as a critical component for enhanced understanding of the complex polycentric forest and climate change instruments amongst stakeholders. This is an area also where significant funding needs to be directed. Therefore, strengthening capacities of countries for resource mobilization is critical. -

Moderatorvery good ALusweti
yes there is a need to better profile the contribution of the forests and trees to climate action in terms of mitigation, adaptation and integrated mitigation and adaptation. AFF has developed a framework which could guide such reporting focusing on the integrated outcomes. The framework is now being appraised in five countries namely Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Zambia.
The objective of the framework is to provide an outline for stakeholders in African forestry in the process of enhancing integrated mitigation and adaptation in forest and on farm tree-based interventions, from a policy and landscape perspectives.
In the framework, propositions are made at policy and landscape levels that if followed will permit programs and projects to deliver integrated mitigation and adaptation outcomes. Moreover, some enabling conditions, locally and internationally, that are relevant to facilitate the design and implementation of policies, strategies and actions, towards the proposed integration are also proposed
for more information on the framework could be obtained in Chia et al. (2019) Framework for enhancing integrated climate change mitigation and adaptation options in forest and on farm tree-based interventions in Africa. ModeratorThanks very much Mezgebu for very good analysis and suggestions for win-win strategies for sustaining forest ecosystem services while at the same time reducing pressure on forest landscape. I fully also agree with your analysis and suggestion to back up contributions from other ecosystems for mitigation and adaptation benefits.

ModeratorCameroon has submitted and updated NDC in September 2021, in which additional mitigation measures are proposed to contain GHG emissions at 76,826 Gg CO2eq by 2030, which represents
an increase of 55% compared to 2010 and a reduction of 35% compared to the
Business as Usual (BAU) scenario. In this scenario, the forestry sector is proposed to contribute by 45.9% of the total of emission reduction and the agricultural sector 16.1%.
Their mitigation measures in the forestry sector include: sustainable development of rural and urban areas; strengthening of the sustainable management of forests and biodiversity,
including through spatial monitoring and sustainable land management that reduce forest cover loss; rehabilitation of degraded lands and reforestation of anthropogenic savannahs, and enhancement of carbon sinks in degraded forests.

ModeratorGood morning esteemed colleagues,
Thanks very much Robert for adding to Sambo’s contribution on the role of the forestry sector on climate change mitigation by providing important figures and statistics. The tradeoff between GHG emission from deforestation and carbon sequestration through reforestation and afforestation, agroforestry and sustainable forest management is also a key aspect to be considered.
It becomes therefore important to have specific examples with relevant figures from African countries by responding to the questions shared above by Jeanette. Any good example from your country to share? -

ModeratorGood morning colleagues,
Welcome to this second session of our online discussion on NDCs. Thanks very much to Sambo for the very elaborated post on how forestry is being captured in NDCs.
Dear Sambo, could you please share the link to this very interesting publication? -

Moderator@Lenjo, thanks for your comments.
NDCs are country’s ambitions for climate actions. Countries are expected to set their targets based on their capabilities. Countries with operational REDD+ projects could therefore capture them as part of their NDCs as well as other Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry Based mitigation targets.
