Session: Regional and global approaches to scaling up Assisted Natural Regeneration
Organizers: Djibril Dayamba, African Forest Forum and ANR Alliance Africa Chair and Robin Chazdon, ANR Alliance Global Co-leader
Date: Tuesday 12 March 2024
Time: 9:00 – 10:30
Venue: Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya – Zambia, Ballroom 3

This session, organized by the Assisted Natural Regeneration Alliance (https://www.anralliance.org/), provides an overview of ANR interventions with a focus on approaches for scaling their adoption. We will start by describing different types of scaling (vertical and horizontal) and elements that need to be considered for successful scaling. Then, the session will share practical experiences from institutions, programmes, projects and initiatives engaged in scaling ANR in different contexts and ecosystems.

Objectives: The session aims to share with attendees and discuss how a range of approaches are used to scale up ANR globally and in selected regions. Approaches include on-farm tree regeneration and management, forest ecosystem restoration, development of agroecosystems and silvopastoral systems, community-based ANR activities in drylands and forest ecosystems, technical support and knowledge products, and implementation of ANR within large-scale landscape restoration initiatives. Session participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences or perspectives on best practices / approaches for scaling up ANR. We also present an overview of the ANR Alliance Mission, Vision, and Strategy to further engage participants.

Outcomes: At the end of the session, participants will be expected to have gained better insight on best approaches that they can use to support scaling of ANR in their respective fields of intervention, in different ecosystems and across different geographic and socio-economic contexts. Following the session, a synthesis document on a set of best approaches for scaling ANR will be prepared and shared through different networks.
