Staff and/or students of  Forest Products / Wood Science and Technology departments at training instittions are invited to attend, and if possible participate and present at, the IRG49 conference (www.irg49.co.za). IRG49 will be the 49th annual conference of the International Research Group on Wood Protection (www.irg-wp.com) and is scheduled to take place from April 29th to May 3rd 2018 at the Hilton Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg.

The South African Wood Preservers Association (SAWPA) is proud to be the host of what is to be the first IRG annual conference to be held on the African Continent, and to mark this distinct occasion, The IRG-WP as an organisation would like to increase the attendance and participation of African based delegates to IRG49. To support and promote African participation, the IRG Executive Council and members approved a significantly reduced registration fee for African domicile delegates for this historic event.

The approved conference fees for all African domicile delegates to attend IRG49 is 2500 SEK (Swedish Krone), a reduction of between 52% to 65% from the usual member and non-member conference fees. For all African domicile students the approved fee is 600 SEK,  a reduction of between 60% - 76% for student members and non-members.

The IRG-WP is a structured group of like-minded scientists and technologists focused on generating knowledge of the science of wood deterioration, and novel solutions to provide sustainably and environmentally responsible products for the protection of wood-based materials. The primary function of the IRG is to provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas and information in an informal atmosphere, unencumbered by refereeing of papers or other pre-conditions.

The primary vehicle is the annual meeting usually held around May of each year with global locations chosen as providing optimal opportunities for interactions between attendees and in settings that are both interesting and economically viable for our diverse attendance from around the world.

The full conference package includes; a welcome reception on the Sunday evening; the conference from Monday to Thursday (including lunch and refreshments); Wednesday afternoon excursion including a dinner, and a closing banquet on the Thursday evening.

Each year between 100 to 190 papers are presented in parallel sessions running over three and a half days, with the topics organised into 5 main sections of Biology, Test Methods and Assessment, Wood Protecting Chemicals, Process and Properties, and Sustainability and Environment. Within these sections various working parties are formed around specific topics as per members specific proposals and interest (http://www.irg-wp.com/about-working-parties.html). A special session is also in the planning and calls for papers on "Innovation and Challenges in wood protection against Termites and Wood beetles
